Here's where you can find out a little more about some of our valued associates, who average 17 years in the A/V business and 12 years with ListenUp.
Custom Division Manager
Originally from the Windy City (Chicago, not Cheyenne), Dave Jackson taught Algebra there for a year before serving as a substitute teacher upon moving to the Denver area. Though he enjoyed teaching, when life as a sub became less satisfying (imagine one too many daily attendance sheets with the name I.P. Freely), Dave took a job as a bench technician at a small audio store in Evergreen. He eventually became the manager, and when ListenUp bought the business in 1978, he managed the newly rechristened enterprise for five more years.
Dave was recruited to open ListenUp’s auto sound department, and after several years there he moved into management at our Denver retail store. In the late 90s Dave worked for a high-tech satellite communications company, which gave him a great perspective on cutting-edge network systems. Since his return to us in 2000, he has served as ListenUp’s general manager and is currently the manager of our Custom Division.
In his spare time, Dave likes to mountain bike to keep in shape. His love of music, which is what got him interested in h-fi in the first place, still fuels much of his enthusiasm for working at ListenUp. “When I first met Walt [Stinson, ListenUp’s co-owner] back in the 70s, it was clear that we shared an appreciation for high-performance equipment. Today we still have that appreciation, and as a company I think we’re pretty good at recognizing and anticipating the evolution of the technology, which really keeps things interesting.”

Sales Consultant
Mike Chapman comes by his interest in electronics naturally, as his father was a rep in the A/V industry and eventually owned a Denver retail franchise. There was always a lot of audio gear around the house — in fact, Mike can still wax rhapsodic about listening to the classic Who’s Next album on his brother’s 8-track player and a pair of Electrophonic headphones.
“I’ve always been passionate about music and music systems, and that’s one of the reasons why I like working at ListenUp. We have a very deep organization with a lot of resources in terms of computerized system design, engineering, installation, and service. There are whole bunch of outfits out there comprised of two or three guys who say they can install a system for you, but not many places can match what we do.”
Mike has had a plethora of positions at ListenUp — he was the manager of our car stereo department (back when we had one), managed both the Colorado Springs and Denver stores at various times, and was in charge of our online store when we were getting that of the ground. Today he is a salesman in our Contract Division. “I really enjoy system design for distributed A/V and dedicated home theaters, and our Reference Theater is an incredible tool to show people what’s possible,” says Mike.
It’s a long way from “Baba O’Riley” on 8-track.
