Store Manager
Boulder native Chris Havekost has one of those “start at the bottom and work your way to the top” stories. In 1983 he was hired as a youngster fresh out of CU to run parts for ListenUp’s (now defunct) car stereo department, and within several years he became that store’s top salesman.

Chris moved over to the Denver home A/V store in 1992, and in 2005 he became its manager. “I’ve really found my calling,” says Chris. I’m a total audio/vidiot.” He’s no pasty-faced geek, though, as true to his Scandinavian heritage he enjoys skiing, climbing, mountain biking, and other outdoor pursuits to balance out his time indoors.

The phrase “You oughta be in pictures” has special meaning for Jackie Moore. She worked at local movie houses in her hometown of Evansville, Indiana from the time she was 15 years old until she was in her twenties, eventually becaming the manager of several different theaters. One visit to Colorado convinced her there were greener pastures out west, though, and so she moved to our fair state in 2000.
Jackie started her ListenUp career as the receptionist at our Denver store, and now she is the administrative manager, overseeing inventory, payroll and all the other paperwork that keeps things humming along. In her off hours she loves all the great outdoor activities the state has to offer, including skiing and snowboarding. She also loves to see live music.
“I enjoy the comfortable work atmosphere we have at ListenUp. It’s not a stale, corporate environment, and people seem to like each other and work well together. I picked up on that even the first time I came in to interview, so I was always glad I got the job.” Jackie, you had us at hello.

Though she was literally born into the A/V world — her father opened Alterman Audio in Metairie, LA in 1973 — Adrienne never seriously considered getting into the business herself. Sure, she spent summers working at the store, eventually taking on bookkeeping and sales-counter duties, but she thought her career path lay elsewhere.
“I majored in sociology and history at the University of Denver,” she says, “and I wasn’t really sure what I was going to do after graduation. Then I went to the CEDIA (Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association) conference in the fall of my senior year, and I was totally intrigued. That really opened my eyes about how many different things in this industry you could do.”
Before becoming a sales person in our Denver retail store, Adrienne was originally hired as the assistant to co-owner Walt Stinson, She says this experience was “like getting an MBA in A/V. I learned so much from Walt — especially the idea that this business is about building long-term relationships rather than just concentrating on short-term profits… I’m also grateful for the resources we have — if someone comes up with a good idea, ListenUp can actually implement it.”

One day back when he was the owner of Reference Audio/Video in Bettendorf, Iowa, Craig Congdon realized he hadn’t been skiing since he opened the store. He further realized that this had to do not only with the long hours inherent in owning your own business, but also the fact that he lived in Bettendorf, Iowa. So he loaded up the truck and moved to Beverly… er, Denver.
Craig has a particular love for high-performance stereo systems. “The majority of my clients want custom-oriented home theaters, but I have done some two-channel setups lately. I think this is important, because the high-end two-channel systems give you a great point of reference for everything else.”
Storing content on hard-drives is the big thing these days, says Craig, and the Sonos digital music system, which allows easy access to these digitized tunes, has made music even more fun. “I have a Sonos system with five Zone Controllers, and when I have company everyone loves to grab a controller and dial up their favorite songs.”
When asked what he likes about working at ListenUp, Craig says “The happiness and satisfaction of our customers. We sell damn good stuff, and clients are almost always extremely pleased with it. Plus there’s an attitude and expectation of professionalism in this company from the top on down. And on a personal level, I enjoy all the sunny days in Colorado that allow me to ski, bike and run.”
No offense to Bettendorf, of course.

Sales Consultant
Jeremy Gage came to us from the great northwest — Seattle, to be specific (or is it Pacific?), where he was a salesman and manager at a regional electronics chain. Though it was primarily a retail operation, his store did do installations, and Jeremy often took the initiative to go to customers’ homes to see what they really needed. This experience laid the groundwork for his time here at ListenUp, where most transactions involve some degree of custom integration.
“I enjoy showing potential clients the best equipment we have to offer, because people get excited when they experience home entertainment at that level. That's why they come to ListenUp. But regardless of the level someone chooses, it usually involves an in-home consultation to make sure we put together a setup that’s exactly right for their unique requirements.”
What does Jeremy like about being in the A/V business and working for ListenUp?
“This is a fun industry — it’s really great to see all the new products and technologies. Plus, customers and vendors treat us with respect. I never have to sell ListenUp as a company, because people already know about us. And the vendors like us because we already have a high degree of knowledge and they don’t have to spend a lot of time training us.”
