The NHT Xd system is the result of the combined efforts of three companies — NHT, DEQX (Digital Equalization and Crossover), and PowerPhysics (amplifiers). The Xd uses sophisticated digital signal processing (DSP) for all its equalization and crossover functions. The Xd arrangement lets the DSP make detailed corrections for the drivers and cabinets while taking into account the abilities and limits of the built-in amplifiers. The result is about as close to acoustic perfection as you can get.

The basic Xd configuration sold here includes a pair of two-way XdS satellite speakers with stands; the XdA, a box containing four channels of power amplification and crossover/equalization for up to two satellites and two subwoofers; and the XdW, a powered bipole subwoofer module. Various configurations of electronics, speakers, and woofer can be added to accommodate anything from 2.1 to 7.1 channels and beyond.

XdS satellite speakers
The XdS mini-monitor is one of the best-value speakers on the planet. It uses a remarkable material called BMC that allows NHT’s engineers to form it into an acoustically ideal baffle shape. The woofer uses a magnesium alloy tapered cone with a motor housed in a cast-magnesium frame. The tweeter uses a special under-hung motor design from Europe. Custom speaker terminals and stands are included. The XdS is designed to work in perfect harmony with the XdA power amp.

XdA power amplifier with crossover/equalization circuitry
This magic box is the brain and brawn of the Xd system. Inside are four 150-watt Power Physics amplifiers, a smart power supply that guarantees full power from an AC outlet in the world. The computerized crossover/equalization circuitry crunches numbers faster and more efficiently than any other system, providing uncanny accuracy and lightning-fast response time.

Each XdA is intended to run two XdSs, biamped, and provide line-level outputs to one or two XdW (subwoofer) units. In addition to the two proprietary speaker outlets and two XLR outputs for the XdWs, the XdA's rear panel gives you the choice of two single-ended (RCA) inputs or two balanced (XLR) inputs for the feeds from your pre/pro. There's a mike input (XLR) that you can use for advanced room correction, in addition to the USB port and a trigger selection switch that allows you to set the XdA for automatic turn-on. The front panel contains a switch that allows you to adjust for the placement of the XdSs — in a corner, against the wall, away from the walls, or on top a video monitor in home theater applications.

XdW subwoofer
The subwoofer for this system boasts a bipole design, with two side-mounted, 10-inch aluminum-cone woofers powered by a PowerPhysics 500W amplifier for big, accurate, room-filling sound. It is controlled by the XdA, which can make it go loud, or deep, or the exact right combination of both. The XdA (and NHT’s engineers) handle all the details about phase, crossover points, slope and group delays, so you don’t have to.
