- Toroidal Power Transformer
You rarely see the words "budget" and "reference" in the same sentence. But the new 40-watt-per-channel NAD C 315BEE integrated amplifier offers features and performance seldom found on an entry-level model, including six line-level inputs, defeatable tone controls, and a front-panel MP3 player input. The editors at England's Hi-fi Newswere so impressed they named it "Best Product 2008-2009".
"A mind-boggling bargain"
"NAD blew all and sundry away with the C 315BEE - not just a successor to the flippin' 3020 but hopefully the vanguard of a new level of performance for entry-level hardware," raved Ken Kessler in the November 2007 issue of Hi-fi News. "Indeed, with no hesitation, I think it deserves to win every Product of the Year award available to a two-channel component."
The Hi-fi News Yearbook 2008 sums up its praise for the C 315BEE: "A mind-boggling bargain. In real terms it costs as little as one-third the price of its ancestor. So do what I'm doing: buy one!"
"A naturalistic presentation"
"Dynamics are plentiful, musical details are well defined, and transient speed is lively, but none of these things stands out; rather, they blend into a naturalistic presentation," reports Neil Gader in his joint review of the NAD C515 BEE CD player and NAD C315 BEE integrated amp for the August 2008 issue of The Absolute Sound.
An entry point for serious listening
As loudspeaker quality and performance continues to improve, especially at modest price points, NAD felt that there was room for a lower cost amp that could take advantage of these speakers. So the company decided to create a new entry point for serious musical performance.
The NAD Design Team faced a difficult challenge. The idea was to maintain the same performance specification as its more expensive amplifiers, while somehow reducing cost. Cost is usually reduced by whittling away at features, power, and performance. But NAD managed to keep down the price tag of the C 315BEE while maintaining an enviable performance and features list.
Considerable capability
While not quite as full-featured as NAD's popular C 325BEE, the C 315BEE is far from a "stripped down" product. With six line-level inputs, full IR remote control, defeatable tone controls and a front panel input for a portable MP3 player, the C 315BEE is fully equipped to be the control center for a high performance music system.
Continuous power delivery of the C 315BEE is conservatively listed at 40 watts. Dynamic power, which is far more important for music listening, offers more than 100 watts. That's far more usable power on tap than other amps at this price. And this power is available across the entire audible band at a class-leading 0.03% THD!
All the hallmarks of NAD technology are present in the C 315BEE. From the generously-sized toroidal power transformer and low ESR smoothing capacitors, to the multiple regulated secondary supplies, and the heavy duty discrete output transistors, the C 315BEE is every bit as refined and sophisticated as other NAD amplifiers.
Proven technology enhanced by innovation
NAD's proprietary PowerDrive circuit offers a remarkable combination of the high-current drive needed for complex loudspeaker loads combined with high levels of undistorted dynamic power. By monitoring the precise operating condition of the power amplifier, PowerDrive uses this intelligence to automatically optimize the power supply settings for uniformly low distortion and maximum power delivery.
For the C 315BEE, NAD's Director of Advanced Development, Bjorn Erik Edvardsen, developed PowerDrive-S™, a clever new computation circuit requiring fewer parts at a much lower cost without any reduction in effectiveness (although this invention is limited to use in lower power amplifiers).
Simple is superior!
The C 315BEE includes everything necessary for musical enjoyment, without any unnecessary clutter or complication. It is refreshingly limited to the essentials, with six line-level inputs, one set of speaker outputs, a headphone jack, and full function wireless remote control. It has a compact size and a handsome yet understated exterior, making it a welcome addition to any room.
Setting new benchmarks
The C 315BEE sets new benchmarks for performance, both measured and audible, at an affordable price point. Fundamental specifications for noise, distortion, power, stereo separation, and volume control tracking, are all class leading. Slightly more esoteric measurements like transient intermodulation distortion, dynamic crossover-notch distortion, power supply rejection, and square wave rise time would be impressive on an amplifier costing many times its modest price.
The result of this high technology is a relaxed and inviting sound that digs out the subtle details in your favorite recordings and presents them across a panoramic stereo sound stage. The impressive dynamic power reserves make the C 315BEE sound both articulate and alive. The silent background and low distortion provide a sense of solidity and presence to your music, while bringing out the best your loudspeakers have to offer.
