Live From Ebbets Field Vol 3

“LIVE FROM EBBETS FIELD – Vol. 3” presented by FM 102.3 KCUV

The Seventies was a special decade for music, and Ebbets Field, located on the first level of Brooks Tower near 15th and Curtis streets, was Denver’s premiere music venue of the time. Founded by concert promoter Chuck Morris, the tiny club’s four-year run saw an amazing array of star power – Tom Waits, Bob Seger, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and nearly every other significant act on the upswing.

The first show on February 13, 1973 kicked off an unprecedented string of compelling bookings – Asleep At The Wheel, J.J. Cale, Ry Cooder, Commander Cody, Dr. John, the Flying Burrito Brothers, Peter Frampton, Dan Hicks, Lightning Hopkins, Howlin' Wolf, Freddie King, Kraftwerk, Little Feat, Taj Mahal, Don McLean, the Outlaws, John Prine, Robin Trower, Jerry Jeff Walker, Muddy Waters and scores more.

At Ebbets Field, hundreds of shows from every genre – rock, blues, folk, country, jazz and comedy – were professionally recorded by the staff of ListenUp, the local audio/video retailer and Ebbets’ sound company. Co-founder and president Walt Stinson entered into an agreement with Ebbets to either simulcast the shows live on free-form radio stations or record them for rebroadcast.

Since launching in the fall of 2003, KCUV has established itself as a station that dares to be different, celebrating an incredibly rich radio heritage in Colorado. When Stinson and archivist Phil Murray offered ListenUp’s library of Ebbets Field recordings for broadcast, KCUV dedicated Sunday nights to airing complete shows.

Now FM 102.3 KCUV has assembled compilation CDs of tracks recorded at Ebbets Field. A portion of the profits from “Live From Ebbets Field – Vol. 3,” the third sampler of an ongoing series, go directly to the Morgan Adams Foundation, to raise awareness and financial support for pediatric cancer.

This goldmine of tracks will take listeners back a few decades, presenting a striking snapshot of the live music from that era – a thrill for both veterans of the Ebbets scene and new generations that have only heard of the legend.

G. Brown of KCUV and Phil Murray of ListenUp have acted as executive producers. Phil made the digital transfers from the original tapes; G. obtained one-time permissions from the artists. The track listing for “Live From Ebbets Field – Vol. 3”:

These tracks, digitally transfered directly from the original tapes, have been remastered by Bob Ferbrache at Absinthe Studios in Westminster. The CD package, designed by Steve Holt, includes a cover shot featuring a vintage hand-illustrated Ebbets Field crew shirt, and a twelve-page booklet with archival photographs of Eric Andersen, Chuck Morris, the Outlaws, Steeleye Span, Pure Prairie League, Peter Frampton, Sopwith Camel, Flo & Eddie, and Robin Trower at Ebbets, taken by Bob Ferbrache. G. Brown wrote the liner notes that detail the history of Ebbets Field as well as the involvement of ListenUp and KCUV.
